Vietnam’s first primary aluminum smelter begins production

A AVietnam’s first primary aluminum smelter, located in the Nhan Co Industrial Park in Dak Nong Province, successfully produced its first batch of metal on July 10, 2026. The facility’s first phase has an annual production capacity of 150,000 tons, which is expected to expand to 300,000 tons in early 2027 and reach 450,000 tons by late 2027 or 2028.

Supported by Vietnam’s abundant bauxite resources, the project marks a major step toward building a fully integrated aluminum value chain, from bauxite mining and alumina refining to primary aluminum production. The new smelter is expected to increase domestic alumina consumption and reduce Vietnam’s reliance on imported primary aluminum.

Market participants are now awaiting the start of commercial metal supply as the plant continues ramping up production.
