Coega Steels, a South African steelmaker, has launched a R360 million rolling mill in the Coega Special Economic Zone, expanding its total site investment to R1.5 billion. The facility turns recycled scrap metal into 150,000 tons of finished steel products yearly, including reinforcing bars, squares, round bars, flat bars, and angle bars.
As the only rolling mill in the Eastern Cape, it reduces regional reliance on imported materials and lowers transport costs.
The expansion creates 300 new jobs, raising the company’s workforce to 900 while supporting over 2,000 indirect roles. Local South Africans will fill 70% to 80% of the new positions.
To lower carbon emissions, Coega Steels operates 8MWp of solar power, with 19.8MWp more and a 50MWh battery system planned by late 2026 and 2027.
