Anglo American’s Brazil nickel sale faces regulatory hurdles

Anglo American’s planned exit from nickel mining in Brazil remains uncertain as European regulators examine the potential impact of the asset sale on regional raw material supplies.

The $500 million transaction with China’s MMG has raised concerns within the European Commission over whether European stainless steel producers would retain reliable access to nickel after the ownership change.

Anglo American has defended the proposed buyer, citing MMG’s operational capabilities and financial strength. The company also maintains that the selection followed a comprehensive assessment of potential investors.

Having committed to withdrawing from nickel operations more than two years ago, Anglo American has limited alternatives if the deal fails. Its Brazilian facilities could eventually be placed under care and maintenance rather than continue normal production.

The company has nevertheless indicated its willingness to explore solutions addressing EU competition concerns.
