Steel Dynamics advances aluminum ramp-up with Q1 production increases

Steel Dynamics, Inc. reports meaningful progress in its aluminum flat-rolled products division. First quarter shipments rose to 22,500 tons from 14,600 tons in the previous quarter.

The company received qualifications for industrial, beverage can, and automotive applications. Despite January startup obstacles leading to US$65 million in operating losses, the firm anticipates sharp earnings growth for the second quarter.

Construction continues at the Columbus, Mississippi aluminum flat rolled products mill and the San Luis Potosi, Mexico recycled aluminum slab center. Two cold mills are currently ramping up, while a third cold mill and a second continuous anneal and solution heat treat (CASH) line remain on schedule for commissioning in the third quarter of 2026.
