China & Canada extend trade agreement through 2028, maintaining market access for selected steel and aluminum products

China and Canada have agreed to extend their trade arrangement, originally reached in January 2026, for another two years through the end of 2028, providing greater stability to bilateral trade.

Under the agreement, China will continue facilitating market access for Canadian agricultural and seafood products, including canola meal, peas, lobster, and crab, while Canada will maintain access for selected Chinese steel and aluminum products.

Since the arrangement took effect in March, Canada’s canola exports to China have increased by 84% year-on-year, demonstrating significant benefits for agricultural trade.

The extension will preserve existing market access arrangements for certain Chinese steel and aluminum products, although specific product categories, import quotas, and applicable tariffs have not yet been disclosed.

As Canada continues trade negotiations with the United States, the alignment of China-Canada steel and aluminum trade policies with broader North American trade regulations remains an important issue to monitor.
