Alcoa targets USD 1 billion in asset monetisation as alumina supply tightens outside China

Alcoa is looking to unlock up to USD 1 billion from asset sales and other monetisation efforts by 2030, with a proposed deal to sell part of its Massena East site in New York expected to generate as much as USD 315 million. The plan comes as alumina supplies outside China tighten and global aluminium inventories remain historically low, potentially supporting the company’s market outlook.

Alcoa shares (NYSE: AA) traded more than 1 per cent higher overnight ahead of Friday, although they remained down 4 per cent for the week. The stock had risen 5.8 per cent in Friday’s trading following the company’s third-quarter (Q3) 2026 results, which showed stronger earnings, higher aluminium production and improved realised aluminium prices.

The proposed sale of part of Alcoa’s Massena East site could bring in up to USD 315 million, with the first payment expected to arrive within six months, subject to approvals and other closing conditions.

“We expect to receive the first USD 50 million to USD 65 million at closing, which is anticipated within 6 months, subject to customary permitting, regulatory approvals, key development and closing conditions,” said CEO William Oplinger during the Q3 earnings call.

The remaining proceeds are expected before the end of 2030, although the agreement allows up to seven years for commissioning. The arrangement could also generate additional payments as the planned data centre is built and expanded, providing Alcoa with a longer-term source of cash beyond the initial transaction.

“It gives us some cash upfront, but it will give us cash further over the next 5 years as that data center first gets built and then gets increased in size. So it gives us a lot of upside.”

Oplinger described the agreement as the first step towards Alcoa’s target of generating USD 500 million to USD 1 billion through asset sales and other monetisation efforts by 2030. The proposed development therefore represents both an immediate source of funding and a potential route to additional proceeds over the coming years.
