US President Trump’s reciprocal tariffs took effect today (April 9), raising global trade tensions. While many countries seek talks with the US, China and the EU are preparing countermeasures.
China warned it would fight Trump’s newly added 50% tariff to the end. The new 50% tariffs bring the total US tariffs on Chinese goods to 104%. China said it would defend its rights if the US pushes ahead with its tariffs.
Besides, the EU planned a two-stage response on US$28 billion in US goods, with the first round of tariffs likely starting on April 15 and the remainder beginning on May 15.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said about 70 countries will have negotiations with the US. Due to the possibility of progress in negotiations, US stocks rose over 3%.
