German crude steel production declines in May

According to statistics from the German Steel Federation (WV Stahl), Germany’s crude steel output reached around 2.98 million tons in May, decreasing by 6.4% compared to the same month a year ago. Among them, output from electric arc furnace (EAF) mills rose by 9.3% to 1.05 million tons, and basic oxygen furnace (BOF) steel output fell by 13% to 1.94 million tons.

In the first five months of this year, cumulative crude steel production in Germany amounted to 14.43 million tons, down by 10.8% year on year. If this trend continues, Germany’s annual crude steel output could fall below the 2023 record low of 35.44 million tons, indicating ongoing structural pressures in the German steel market despite some recovery in EAF steel output.
