South American Steel Production Dropped Marginally in June
The steel production by the entire South American region dropped marginally during June this year. The production recorded 0.4% year-on-year decline during the month. However, the combined output during the first six months of the year surpassed the half-yearly production in 2017 by 2.4%.
According to data published by the World Steel Association (worldsteel), the South American regional production declined marginally by 0.4% from 3.403 million tonnes (Mt) in June last year to 3.390 Mt in June this year. Meantime, the cumulative output during the first half of the current year reported marginal year-on-year increase by 2.4% from 21.224 Mt to 21.742 Mt, worldsteel data said.
The leading crude steel producer in the region during June this year was Brazil. The country accounted for more than 76% of the total regional output. When compared with the previous year, the Brazilian output declined by 2.2% to total 2.590 Mt. It must be noted that Brazil’s production had totaled 2.649 Mt in June last year. The production by the country totaled 16.862 Mt during the first six months of 2018, marginally higher by 0.9% from 16.715 Mt during H1 last year.
