Jamaican Parliament Member: Aluminum industry’s costs & benefits have to be evaluated
Michael Stewart, Member of Jamaican Parliament for Manchester South said that the costs and benefits of the alumina and bauxite industry had to be evaluated since the residents of Rose Hill on the Manchester Plateau protested that the bauxite mining near their living area caused dust and noise pollution but there weren’t any consultations with them before the mining on May 2nd.

It was understood that bauxite mining has destroyed plants, animals, farms, and water quality for decades, but the residents there felt helpless.

Stewart said that a representative of the bauxite and alumina company Jiuquan Iron and Steel Company (JISCO) met with residents and received a list of claims for compensation.
