ANDI: Colombian government must control steel scrap exports
It was reported that the National Business Association of Colombia (ANDI) urged the Colombian government to control scrap exports since it is a raw material for the production of steel products, especially for the construction sector.
According to María Juliana Ospina, director of ANDI's Steel Chamber, Colombia is heavily dependent on the production of steel through scrap in electric furnaces. In 2020, as there was a shortage of this raw material, it was forced to import steel billet and scrap in order not to slow down the good performance of the construction sector.
According to the director, the Colombian steel sector has the goal of growing its production by 15% for this year, thus it would need about 134,000 tons of scrap to be able to produce 1.33 million tons of steel.
In 2018, about 90,000 tons of scrap were exported, so it was very important that the Colombian government limited exports of this important raw material, according to the director.
