Africa's Crude Steel Output Surged 8% in H1 2018
The crude steel production by the African region surged higher significantly by 8% during the initial six-month period of the current year. The production witnessed over 14% surge during the month of June ’18. According to production statistics released by the World Steel Association (worldsteel), all countries in the region reported increased steel production levels during the month, as compared with the previous year.
The regional production totaled 7.148 million tonnes (Mt) in the initial six-month period this year. This is higher by 8% when compared with the production that had totaled only 6.620 Mt during the same month a year before.
The Egyptian steel output totaled 3.767 Mt in Jan-June ’18, as compared with 3.331 Mt during the first six months of 2017. Year-on-year, the country recorded 13.1% jump in production. The South African production too climbed higher by 3.9% from 3.078 Mt to 3.197 Mt. On the other hand, the combined output by Libya in H1 2018 was still lower from the year before by 12.4%. The Libyan crude steel production dropped from 210,000 tonnes to 184,000 tonnes over the previous year.
